ARTHRITIS

The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis (OA), which involves the breakdown of cartilage in joints, typically the hips and knees. In order to combat this, many people try to lose weight, use over-the-counter and prescription medications, and get cortisone injections into the joint to ease discomfort. However, acupuncture is a safe way to ease pain from OA pain as well! While this is not a cure, because nothing in western or eastern medicine is currently replacing the lost cartilage, it can help ease the pain.

The Journal of Pain in 2018 found "acupuncture to be effective for treating osteoarthritis pain, among other types of chronic pain, and that the benefits persist over time and pain relief can’t be explained solely by a placebo effect."

Practitioners also say that acupuncture can help relieve pain associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). This form of arthritis is occurs when the body's immune system "attacks" the joints and causes inflammation. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce inflammation and relieve various forms of pain.

According to Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, “acupuncture alone or combined with other treatment modalities is beneficial to the clinical conditions of RA (rheumatoid arthritis) without adverse effects reported and can improve function and quality of life and is worth trying.”

If you or someone you know suffers from arthritis, a series of acupuncture appointments could be the missing piece to finding comfort.

    So, what is food therapy?

In Chinese medicine, food has been used for thousands of years as a way to heal the body. All foods have different properties, such as warming, cooling, bitter, pungent, sour, spicy, etc. You can use these properties to your advantage based on your own individual constitution and the time of year! For example, everyone should incorporate these foods into their diets this summer because they help cool the body:
    • Watermelon
    • Cucumber
