{a condition in which bones become weak and brittle}

The leading cause of osteoporosis is a lack of hormones-- specifically estrogen in women and androgen in men. This is a very common ailment in women over 60 years old as women lose estrogen during menopause, which affects the bone density.

At the First Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu Medical College researchers conducted a controlled clinical trial that concluded that "acupuncture reduces pain levels and promotes increased bone density in patients with osteoporosis."

A common treatment for osteoporosis in the western world is calcium supplementation. In this study, they compared the two treatments and found that "both approaches to patient care produced positive patient outcomes; however, acupuncture outperformed calcium supplementation." 90.1% of the group that received acupuncture had effective treatment, while 80.22% of the group that received calcium supplementation had effective treatment.

The study concluded that "acupuncture is helpful in restoration of bone density in patients with osteoporosis. Calcium supplementation also produced significant positive patient outcomes."

I love when western and eastern medicine can work together. Check out the study if you'd like!

    In Chinese medicine, food has been used for thousands of years as a way to heal the body. All foods have different properties, such as warming, cooling, bitter, pungent, sour, spicy, etc. You can use these properties to your advantage based on your own individual constitution and the time of year! For example, everyone should incorporate these foods into their diets this summer because they help cool the body:
    • Watermelon
    • Cucumber
