Hey all! I'm so excited to announce that Healing Haven Acupuncture now offers gift cards!
Give the gift of pain reduction, stress relief, digestive comfort, hormonal balance, glowing skin, a better night sleep, and an all around healthier, happier, and harmonious life. ❤️ I can’t stress enough how important self care is. We show up better for ourselves, our jobs, school, the ones we love, our kids, our pets, and the universe when we are well taken care of! Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine have been around for thousands of years for a reason— This. Stuff. Just. Simply. Works. If you haven’t tried it for yourself yet, maybe you need to ask for a gift card! I love watching the skepticism melt away with acupuncture and/or cupping virgins as they drift off into blissful acupuncture land in my cozy clinic. Think you don’t like needles? Most patients don’t even feel them because they’re about the width of a human hair. In fact, you can fit 40 acupuncture needles inside of a hypodermic needle (the kind you get shots with)! Sooo.. if we’re talking shot needles? Yeah. I don’t like those either! 😩 These gift cards can be purchased in the clinic or over the phone and mailed to you! Comment below if you have questions, babes.

Baby joy! 👶🏼
If one of your 2020 goals is to expand your family, I highly recommend looking into alternative medicine! Not only can it help us conceive naturally without all the extra hormones, stress, expenses, etc. that comes with IVF treatment, but it balances the whole body. What does that mean?! Most mamas-to-be (and people in general!) have a couple different health issues that bug them on the reg and keep them from living their best lives. Not only does acupuncture and herbal therapy prep the womb for conception, but will assist in better sleep, healthy digestion, clearer skin, less stress and pain, fewer headaches, and the list goes on! Also.... One of the greatest joys of my job is hearing “I’M PREGNANT!” from one of my patients after only a handful of treatments 🤗 (6 treatments for this patient to be exact) Happy 2020 all! What are your health and wellness goals for the new year? Are you or someone you know trying to conceive? Comment below! 😘 Hey everyone! Exciting news! Local Honey 🍯❤️
Honey is a great healer to keep around your pantry! Here are a few ideas of how you can use it at home for yourself and your family: 🍯 place a little bit of honey on bug bites and canker sores to soothe 🍯 take one teaspoon of local honey per day to combat allergies 🍯 mix honey with warm water for a sore throat (add a lemon for added benefit!) 🍯 mix one teaspoon of honey in warm water and drink for constipation Raw honey has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties and also promotes digestive health. When the honey is also local, it contains a blend of local pollen which can strengthen the immune system and reduce pollen allergy symptoms! Who else feels weird and detached at the doctor's office with these vibes: all-white-rooms, somehow-always-blowing-on-you-air-conditioning, lack-of-eye-contact and almost-no-time-spent-with-you? Whenever I go to the doc and I'm not feeling good, I barely feel taken care of! Sometimes you just need to feel heard and understood... and THEN round out the experience with something that will get you feeling normal again.
Let's talk about your health goals over a cup of tea and a candlelit office setting with some soft music. The best part of your acupuncture treatment comes after our little chat about your medical history and treatment plan: you get to take a NAP. You do nothing. You lay there on a tempur-pedic treatment table with cozy blankets. You sleep. You heal. You probably want (and will always get if that's your thing) a little essential oil foot or neck rub. You get back out in the world and kick some butt. ARTHRITIS
The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis (OA), which involves the breakdown of cartilage in joints, typically the hips and knees. In order to combat this, many people try to lose weight, use over-the-counter and prescription medications, and get cortisone injections into the joint to ease discomfort. However, acupuncture is a safe way to ease pain from OA pain as well! While this is not a cure, because nothing in western or eastern medicine is currently replacing the lost cartilage, it can help ease the pain. The Journal of Pain in 2018 found "acupuncture to be effective for treating osteoarthritis pain, among other types of chronic pain, and that the benefits persist over time and pain relief can’t be explained solely by a placebo effect." Practitioners also say that acupuncture can help relieve pain associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). This form of arthritis is occurs when the body's immune system "attacks" the joints and causes inflammation. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce inflammation and relieve various forms of pain. According to Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, “acupuncture alone or combined with other treatment modalities is beneficial to the clinical conditions of RA (rheumatoid arthritis) without adverse effects reported and can improve function and quality of life and is worth trying.” If you or someone you know suffers from arthritis, a series of acupuncture appointments could be the missing piece to finding comfort. https://health.usnews.com/conditions/arthritis/acupuncture-for-arthritis COSMETIC ACUPUNCTURE ✨☺️✨
This is also known as the natural face-lift or natural Botox! A treatment consists of tiny acupuncture needles placed all over the body for a full system treatment as well as in the face to create positive microtraumas, which sends your body into repair mode-- aka stimulates that collagen and blood flow! Healthline states that "these punctures stimulate your lymphatic and circulatory system, which work together to deliver nutrients and oxygen to your skin cells, nourishing skin from the inside out. This helps even out your complexion and promote your skin’s glow. The positive microtraumas also stimulates the production of collagen. This helps improve elasticity, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles." The focus of these treatments is to create long-term changes in the health of the skin and body regarding collagen stimulation, a brightened skin tone, reduced jaw tension, and a softer appearance overall on top of health benefits like reduced anxiety and tension. The outcome isn't that stretched skin, no emotion Botox look that many think of with a face-lift. Instead, a healthy, younger, and brighter complexion with softened fine lines and wrinkles occurs over the course of 10 weekly sessions. https://www.healthline.com/health/beauty-skin-care/facial-acupuncture#how-does-it-work COLD & FLU
University Hospitals states that "studies have shown that patients receiving acupuncture have elevated immune-enhancing hormones and blood counts for up to three days after treatment. If you begin to feel the symptoms of the cold or flu coming on, it is important to visit your acupuncturist right away to get the most benefit from your treatment." Acupuncture can: ✨Prevent colds and flu by boosting the immune system ✨Help you get over the cold or flu faster if you already have it ✨Reduce chills, fever and body aches ✨Relieve sore throat and congestion I like to pair acupuncture with cupping to break up any congestion in the chest and clear out heat from a fever! https://www.uhhospitals.org/Healthy-at-UH/articles/2014/12/acupuncture-for-cold-and-flu-season Magic Common Cold Soup
This simple soup is an ancient Chinese remedy that is used when someone is experiencing a fever along with cold symptoms. Cook this broth when you feel a fever, chills and a runny nose: Green Onion, Garlic and Ginger Soup 2 green onions (use only the white part) cut into several pieces 1 piece of ginger the size of a thumb, cut into slices 2 to 3 cloves of garlic, cut into slices 1 to 2 teaspoons of brown sugar or honey Put the green onions, ginger, and garlic into a pot and add 2¼ cups of water. Boil the soup for 10 minutes and then add brown sugar or honey. Drink it while it is warm or hot. After drinking the soup, curl up into a warm blanket and rest. After a few minutes, you may begin to sweat while your fever and cold symptoms dissipate. Sweating helps release the cold and is a sign that your Wei Qi (defensive qi in Chinese Medicine) is pushing the cold out of your body! P.S. This acupuncture point (LI 4) pictured above on the hand between the thumb and pointer finger (in that juicy muscle that feels tender when you rub it) is used to help rid the body of a cold as well! This is a common point being used in the clinic this fall! Come see me if you need some cold care or try rubbing this point at home to speed up your healing process if you are feeling under the weather (Recipe credit to University Hospitals and Julia Proctor L.Ac) What does it take to become an acupuncturist? 📍
I've gotten this question a lot recently, followed by a shocked face and usually a "WHAT?!" First of all, you have to be interested in holistic and alternative medicine. I grew up in a household where we didn't necessarily reach for the Advil every time something felt off, so I think I was at an advantage in that regard to be nudged in this direction. I have been fascinated by essential oils, herbs, and natural remedies and products for almost 10 years as well. Next was signing up for the education journey. I finished a 4 year Bachelor of Science in Biology before immediately entering a 3 year (year-round) Master's program through Northwestern Health Sciences University. Yup. 8 years of school! I'm less than 20 credits away from receiving my doctorate and will probably do that sometime in the next few years. Along with graduating from an accredited school and getting licensed by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, I passed 3 national board exams through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. These board exams not only involved eastern medicine concepts, but bio-medicine as well! Since western doctors won't learn our language involving yin, yang, qi, blood, etc., we learn their language as well so we can communicate effectively with doctors, chiropractors, PTs, patients, and more! Many people think that becoming an acupuncturist is just a quick certification and a hundred hours of training or so, but it really is an extensive medicine-- hence, the "WHAT?!" response. The best part is that we can describe what's happening in your body as "woo-woo" or as scientific as we need to in any situation we might be in! So to all of you hippies and also to all of you scientists: any questions? |
Love cupping!Love cupping is like normal cupping in that it has all of the benefits of regular cupping, with a heart-shaped twist.
So, what is food therapy? In Chinese medicine, food has been used for thousands of years as a way to heal the body. All foods have different properties, such as warming, cooling, bitter, pungent, sour, spicy, etc. You can use these properties to your advantage based on your own individual constitution and the time of year! For example, everyone should incorporate these foods into their diets this summer because they help cool the body:
